Open Air School

Open Air School lies nestled in the suburb of Glenwood in Durban, surrounded by Glenwood High School and Glenwood Junior Primary School. We cater for approximately 260 learners, from pre-primary to grade 12, providing an Academic Mainstream education to children with Special Educational Needs who are unable to attend Mainstream schools due to lack of ramps, rails, access to classes, specialised devices and Therapy support.

Embracing the school motto, “I can and I will”, learners persevere and many go on to excel in academics, sports and cultural activities. In fact, many present and past learners have gone on to compete provincially, nationally and internationally in various sporting codes.

The hostel, situated a stone’s throw away from UKZN Howard College Campus, provides a term-time home to many of the high school learners who live too far from the school to commute on a daily basis. Fundraising initiatives are very important for an NPO such as ours and with restrictions being lifted the school hopes to have a Colour Run around its Hostel Grounds in the second term, and a Drama Gala, Potjie Competition in the 3rd term.

We also collaborate with schools in the area to increase awareness of living a life with a disability, and to enjoy appropriate activities with peers from other schools inclusively. These include Spelling Bee’s, Math Olympiad, Interact, Climbing and visits to schools. Schools also visit us for Social Responsibility or Community Service Time.

The school is 101 years old this year, and has much to offer as an institution of Excellence.
