Celebrating Heritage Month at UKZN

Enjoy three jazz events at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music on UKZN’s Howard College Campus this Heritage Month.

A JAZZ and Heritage Festival is being held at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music on UKZN’s Howard College Campus from 23 to 25 September to celebrate Heritage Month in music. The celebrations kick off with a Tribute to Mama Africa, Miriam Makeba, on Monday, 23 September, which will be a fundraiser for the Manning Road Methodist Church (MRMC). On Heritage Day, 24 September, there’s a Jazz and Heritage lunch concert with all proceeds going to the Ronnie Madonsela Scholarship. The concert features young jazz talent from surrounding schools as well student ensembles from the UKZN jazz programme. The UKZN Big Band will headline the bill featuring Township Jazz arranged by legendary saxophonist Khaya Mahlangu as well as items by pianist and composer, Bheki Mseleku. ALSO READ: Don’t miss Durban Fashion Fair On Wednesday, 25 September, audiences can enjoy a special concert by the Sankofa band, led by composer and multi-reedsman, Professor Salim Washington.Washington has brought together Sanele Phakathi (piano), Dalisu Ndlazi (bass guitar), Bucco Xaba (drums), Zoe The Seed (vocals) and Phuti Mofokeng (trumpet) for this ensemble. The Tribute to Mama Africa will be at Centre for Jazz and Popular Music, Howard College from 5pm. Tickets are R100 for adults, R80 for pensioners and R50 for students. The Sankofa band will perform at 6pm, with doors opening at 5.30pm. Cost is R80 for adults, R50 for pensioners and R 25 for students.
