Baroque flute special at concert

THE seventh concert of Baroque 2000 Series is on Sunday, 24 November at 3pm in the Church of the Mariannhill Monastery.

Evelien Ballantine will be the soloist and will show her skills on the traverso, the Baroque flute. This instrument is the ancestor of the modern flute – it is made of wood and has only six finger holes plus a 7th hole on the far end that is closed unless opened by a single key. Evelien will play the Concerto for flute in D major by Georg Philipp Telemann and she will be joined by Ralitza Macheva on the violin in a trio sonata by George Frideric Handel.

The whole string ensemble is performing at the special lower pitch of A 415 which was in use in the XVII and early XVIII centuries. The instruments are fitted with animal gut strings instead of modern metal ones, thus providing a very mellow and rich sound. The concert will open with Johann Pachelbel’s famous Canon. Ralitza will perform the Chaconne for violin and basso continuo by Giovanni Battista Vitali and she will lead the ensemble through a Concerto in D major for strings by Antonio Vivaldi.
