Time of the Writer affirms author’s work

The programme will be featuring 15 accomplished writers from South Africa and the rest of the world.

FROM sitting in the crowd to being a guest writer, Busi Maphumulo is ready to experience her first Time of The Writer on the other side of the aisle.

“I’m a big fan of TOW, I used to bring my children to the shows so it feels great to be able to experience it as a writer. It’s something I will never forget, it’s the greatest affirmation of my work,” she said.

The 23rd annual edition of Time of the Writer, hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts, will take place in Durban from 16 to 21 March. The programme will be featuring 15 accomplished writers from South Africa and the rest of the world.

Maphumulo is a novelist, children’s book writer and an English teacher at Dwengu High School, south of Durban. Her debut book, Kade babekhala (For so long, they’ve been crying), which was released in 2008, is a drama commenting on sexual and emotional abuse between teachers and learners. The book was awarded a prize by the KZN Department of Arts and Culture.

She’s gone on to publish a further five books, with her recent one uNono Uthola Umngani (Nono finds a friend) being translated to five languages.
“As a teacher, I have found that my work centers around youth and children,” she said. Writing frees me spiritually and intellectually. It doesn’t limit me, I enjoy the opportunity to be able to research, read and spice up my stories.”

Maphumulo will be speaking at the Writer’s Visit programme on Tuesday (17 March) at the UKZN Howard College IsiZulu Department and at The Craft & Business of Children’s Writing along with other prominent children’s book writers on Wednesday (17 March) at the KwaZulu-Natal Society of the Arts.
