Energy challenge ignites learners on climate change

Learners are encouraged to demonstrate how simple energy-saving actions can reduce electricity consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

With just a few days remaining before entries close, eThekwini Municipality is urging primary schools across the City to enter the 2026/2027 Energy Efficiency Schools Competition.

The competition aims to give learners an opportunity to become champions of energy conservation and climate action. It is open to learners in Grades Five to Seven.

“The competition challenges schools to showcase innovative ideas on responsible energy use through two categories: the Energy Efficiency Poster Competition and the Energy Efficiency Drama/Play Competition,” explained Senzelwe Mzila, spokesperson of eThekwini Municipality.

Guided by the theme, “Saving Energy Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow”, learners are encouraged to demonstrate how simple energy-saving actions can reduce electricity consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and help build a sustainable future.

“The competition forms part of the municipality’s broader Energy Efficiency and Climate Change Mitigation Programme, which aims to promote environmental awareness and encourage lasting behavioural changes among young people,” added Mzila.

By participating, learners can influence energy-saving practices not only at school but also within their homes and communities.

The City said winning schools will receive sustainability upgrades, including energy-efficient lighting and other approved technologies, helping to reduce electricity consumption while creating practical learning opportunities for learners.

Schools are encouraged to submit original entries that highlight practical solutions for saving energy and protecting the environment. Posters must be hand-drawn on A3 paper, while drama or play entries must be recorded and submitted on a USB drive in MP4 format.
