A Windmill Park family is rebuilding from the ashes of what was once their home.
This is after the home was recently razed to the ground in what they believe was a fire caused by load reduction.
The children’s father, mechanic Mafika Mthembu, was outside when the fire broke out in the lounge.
He said the family managed to escape, but he sustained burn wounds and a client’s car parked on the property was destroyed, as well as all the family’s belongings, including cellphones, kitchenware, clothing and furniture.

It is believed an electrical fault caused by a power outage is what led to the blaze.
“The children were in the house when smoke filled the rooms, but they were able to escape with the assistance of neighbours and quick thinking,” Mthembu said.

The difficult challenge of starting again with little assistance now awaits the family.
They are relying on donations from neighbours, local businesses and churches because, according to them, the municipality has declined to provide housing assistance.
Mthembu said small acts of kindness have helped, but they are far from rebuilding a complete home.

Clothing, bedding, basic cooking supplies, toiletries, and financial assistance for medical costs and temporary housing are among the most urgent requirements.
