Taxi fare increase looms

Poorer commuters will be hard-hit as taxi fares are expected to escalate in Boksburg.

According to Andy Khoza, spokesperson for the Reiger Park Boksburg District Taxi Association, following the recent increase in the price of petrol by 84 cents per litre, increase in taxi fares is imminent.
“Members of the association are expected to meet soon, to discuss the possible fare hike,” says Khoza.
“Taxi users in Boksburg could face between R.50c to R1 increase in fares if plans to raise charges go ahead.”
Khoza says while the move would be “unfortunate”, taxi operators could not be expected to cover the cost of fuel increases out of their own pockets.
Khoza states that it is unfortunate that their passengers always get hit by these changes, but taxi operators need to restore their net earnings.
He added that there has been no increase of the fares for the past four years, but because of the recent dramatic fuel increase, the association saw this as an opportune time to look at them again.
n The SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) has recently launched an index to be used by associations to calculate taxi fares.
