According to Lieut Juanita Coetzer, communications officer for the Boksburg North SAPS, failing to keep any firearm, imitation firearm, airgun, device or ammunition safely locked away, or not having a licence for it, could be cause for an arrest.
“In the course of conducting official policing duties, an SAPS member may search any premises or vehicles if suspected to hold firearm in contravention of the Firearm Act.
“It is also an offence to discharge or otherwise handle a firearm, an antique firearm or an airgun, in a manner likely to injure or endanger the safety or property of any person or with reckless disregard for the safety or property of any person,” says Coetzer.
“It is an offence to discharge a firearm, an antique firearm of an airgun in a built up area or any public place, without good reason to do so, and more especially, when an animal is injured in the process.”
Community members are urged to take this act into consideration and refrain from using firearm, airgun or BB guns irresponsibly.
Parents are encouraged to educate their children about the dangers of playing irresponsibly with their toy guys in the suburbs.
