The outreach programme is aimed at helping learners from indigent families to acquire learners and drivers licences for free.
Speaking at the event, Ekurhuleni mayor, Mondli Gungubele, said that the programme is an effort to get more responsible drivers on the road.
“We are talking to our stakeholders, such as driving schools and businesses, to come on board and ensure that we help these kids to get their drivers’ licences,” he said.
Gungubele explained how having a driver’s licence has become a necessity, especially for work purposes.
Furthermore, the mayor and Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Dr Ismail Vadiwill, formally launched the municipality’s first schools outreach programme to train and test learners for learner licences.
“Through this programme learners are booked and tested over weekends and any other convenient time that is not in conflict with their schooling programme,” said Gungubele.
More than 200 learners attended the event and seemed excited to be given the opportunity to get their learners licence.
