Joint smoking man nabbed for growing dagga in backyard

A 55-year-old man was busy puffing his dagga joint at home when EMPD officers on high alert pounced on him.

The officers also discovered that he was growing marijuana in his backyard.

The officers, together with the Peace Corps, were on patrol on February 22, by the Loliwe informal settlement at around 1.30pm when they noticed a 55-year-old man smoking a dagga joint.

“They decided to search his property and then discovered several dagga plants surrounding his shack,” said EMPD spokesperson Kebeli Mokheseng.

The officers uprooted and confiscated the plants, which were estimated to be weighing more than 50kg.

Kobeli said the suspect told the police that he “doesn’t sell but only he enjoys smoking the prohibited plant”.

The suspect was taken to the Dawn Park SAPS and charged with possession of illicit substance.

He will appear at the Vosloorus Magistrates Court soon.
