Climbing the mountain of life with courage
East Rand Business Women (ERBW) met for the first time this year at a new venue and with new committee members to steer the ship.
It was a fun-filled morning as the ladies gathered at Summer Place, on February 8. They used to meet at Birchwood Hotel.
The invited guest speaker for the day was Marlette Hegyi, also known as Molly, who is a mountaineer, endurance athlete and motivational speaker,
Molly knows what it takes to conquer fears, break limitations and overcome challenges.
Using her climbing experience as a metaphor for life and its uphill struggles, Molly inspired the women with lessons learnt from her high-altitude adventures.
Speaking about resilience and fearlessly achieving goals, Molly shared her memorable moments as a mountaineer.
She also commented on the importance of team dynamics, citing points such as commitment, teamwork, leadership and followership.
She said resilience is like an elastic band: when you stretch it, it automatically bounces back to its original form.
“It is important to have courage to bounce back from being stretched and try again despite failure. People should ask themselves how they view failure – as a setback or feedback?
“When you have a goal there will be pain and discomfort but when that pain becomes greater it is necessary to move where you are to where you want to be,” said Molly.
She shared her summiting “STEPS” guide with guests:
S – Set specific goals (write these goals down).
T – Train (prepare for the goal, how to get there).
E – Enjoy the ride (do what you enjoy and document the process).
P – People (people can help or hinder your goal. Mix with people who will help you achieve your goal. Can people trust you, who are you roped to in life, can you trust people and can they trust you?).
S – Share (share your story so you can inspire someone).
The mountaineer advised the ladies to share their success stories so they can inspire others to overcome their challenges.
* Antoinette Swanepoel has taken over from Marinda Lombaard as ERBW’s new chairlady and said she hopes to add value to the organisation and its members.
