Car theft plan foiled in Boksburg North, suspect (52) nabbed

When the three men realised that the police were after them, they abandoned their gateway vehicle on the corner of Paul Smit Street

A 52-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to steal a car that was parked outside a company in Boksburg North on June 10.

The witness who works for the company told the police that while he was in his car he saw a silver/grey Nissan Xtrail with three men inside.

According to Boksburg North police spokesperson Const Justice Ramaube when the 32-year-old witness looked closer at them, he realised that one of the men approached his colleague’s car with sharp objects which looked like tools to steal a car.

“When the men noticed that they have been seen by the 32-year-old witness, they ran back to their vehicle and fled. The 32-year-old man gave chase while asking for back-up from the police,” Ramaube said.

When the three men realised that the police were after them, they abandoned their gateway vehicle on the corner of Paul Smit Street and ran in different directions.

Sgt Silus Mphela and Const Een Maesela, from the Boksburg North police, managed to corner the 52-year-old man, who was then arrested.

“When the police searched him and the gateway vehicle, they found two screwdrivers, two fake car keys, two sharp objects known as ‘Guqza’. They also found a pipe wrench spanner and a Huawei and a Nokia cellphone and chargers,” Ramaube said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was from Katlehong. When the police went to check the victim’s car they found that the driver’s door had been forced open and the window was damaged. Meanwhile, one of the sharp objects was found in the car’s ignition and door window.

The estimated damages to the victim’s car are about R20 000.

The 52-year-old suspect was charged with attempted theft of motor vehicle, malicious damage to property, and being in possession of car stealing implements or instruments.

Police are still looking for other suspects. He will appear in the Boksburg North Magistrate’s Court soon.
