Reiger Park community leader keeps Mandela’s legacy alive
The leader fed hundreds of poor families as a way of celebrating the activist's birthday and 67 years of public service
July 18 marks Mandela Day, and to celebrate the life of the late anti-apartheid struggle icon, Reiger Park community leader Quinton Adolf went all out to find food for the hungry families in his community.
In partnership with donors from Spiritual Chords, Adolf handed out food parcels and other essential items to over 300 households, thereby benefiting an estimated over 1 000 hungry residents in Popcorn Valley.
A team of volunteers worked hours on Saturday handing out the food parcels consisting of rice, vegetables, pasta, bread, soup, soap and sweets. Beneficiaries also received sanitisers and masks.
“Due to the vulnerability, unemployment and hunger exacerbated by the lockdown, I took it upon myself to find food for the most vulnerable in my community as a way of giving back to Tata Mandela, who dedicated his life to improve our lives.
“After understanding the plight of the hungry families who are often overlooked by many of our leaders as the food parcels is concerned, I said we cannot go on like this, something needs to be done.
“I thank God that he blessed me with the strength and ability to reach out to the needy families of Reiger Park. Thank you to my donors who supported us to make this possible. We really appreciate you for supporting us,” said Adolph.

He pointed out that his plan is to make the initiative go beyond just celebrating the activist’s birthday.
“This is phase one. Phase two and three are in the pipeline for the broader community.
“It is Mandela Day, and we want to say thank you to him as well. We have to appreciate Tata on his birthday, he is our loving father, he was for the people, and he was for the nation. Long live the spirit and dreams of Mandela.”
