Enter virtual run to support little fighter recovering from cerebral meningitis
Her mom said Mea is a fighter - even in the darkest of times
The public is invited to participate in the Run For Mea virtual run in support of Mea Lilly Meyer (10), who is gradually recovering from cerebral meningitis. The race can be completed on August 10 from 6am till 6pm and the registration fee is R50.
Participants from all over the country can run, walk, jog or ride a bicycle for five or 10km from any chosen location. All participants will receive a virtual number and certificate and will be eligible for a lucky draw.
The funds are being raised for Mea’s medical expenses, a new generator (to keep her medical equipment on during a power outage) and renovations to her room (as it is too small for her assistive devices and medical equipment).
“Our goal is to raise R132 000, which means 2 700 people should participate in this virtual run, from the 59 million people in South Africa,” her mother, Zandré, explained.
She said Mea’s journey started a week before her fifth birthday.
“She had to undergo many surgeries to help her breathe and keep her heart beating. She spent seven months in Clinton Hospital’s paediatric ICU. She is a fighter and even in the darkest of times she kept on fighting,” her mother said. “She was sent home with a pacemaker, a tracheostomy and a ventilator in January, 2016. We’ve been caring for her at home since then.”
On July 4, 2019, Mea underwent an operation for a diaphragm pacemaker to help her breathe more independently off of the ventilator, she added.
Her mother said she was taken off the ventilator in September 2019, but still have a tracheostomy and is on oxygen.
“We are continuing to pray for her recovery. There is progress, but it is very slow. We would appreciate any assistance in this regard,” Meyer said.
