Lend a helping hand to Bokkie Park animals

The group will visit the park once a month to assist Bokkie Park staff with the feeding of animals

Residents who would like to open their hearts to animals at the Bokkie Park can now join the Bokkie Park Positive Group on WhatsApp.

“The main objective of the group is to get people involved, so they can see what is going on instead of complaining about Bokkie Park. If you want to see a difference, then you need to make a difference. To do that, you need to do something,” explained Helen Bergh, local AfriForum chairperson and one of the organisers.

Eight of the group members (AfriForum and public) gathered at the park from as early as 9am recently to assist Bokkie Park staff to mix dry food for the animals in a hammer mill. They mixed enough food to last about a month. They worked until about noon and left no stone unturned as they also helped fix a broken pump at the park.

Local AfriForum vice-chairperson Francois Reyneke organised this gathering.

According to Bergh, they are planning to visit the park once a month to mix dry food for the animals.

“Please let us know if you want to help us or get involved. As soon as the Covid-19 levels are lowered, we can get more people to assist. Then we can make turns to come to the park. Your children can run around and play with the animals. So, contact us if you want to be part of our group that supports the park in a positive way.”

She highlighted members of the public should refrain from tossing food over the fence in an attempt to feed animals.

If you’re one of the good-hearted people who actually brings food to the Bokkie Park, please don’t throw it over the fence. We don’t know what animals are running by the fence and what they’re eating. If you really want to donate, put it on a group or take it to the back gate of the park. They will know what food to give to which animal,” she pointed out.

She said they are also willing to collect food. “Instead of overfeeding animals or feeding them the wrong things, let’s keep this organised.”

Helen may be contacted on 072 144 5693 and Francois on 082 811 0233.

Boksburg SPCA has been working closely with the Bokkie Park management and private veterinarians tendered to treat the animals. Local SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore said they haven’t found any new problems at the park and their inspectors are still conducting weekly inspections.
