About 50 volunteers cleaned up the veld along Racecourse Road, Atlas Road and Dunswart Pan on August 15.
Jane Trembath, chairperson of Korsman Conservancy, and Heather Griffin, from Litter Bugs, initiated the clean-up, which took place from 8.30am till 11.30am.

According to the organisers, the image of the veld was heavily degraded because of illegal dumping and encroachment of invasive alien vegetation.

“This space is abundant with flowers and tons of bird life during the summer. The veld is filthy and not only is it an eyesore, but it’s affecting the grass wildlife and birds. This is why we came to clean this area today. We care about the environment and animals,” explained Trembath.

Litter Bugs, Korsman Conservancy, Ashton College learners, Creation Care from Northfield Methodist Church, Etwatwa Greening Team and community members supported the event.

“We’re grateful about the amazing support we received from the community. Without them we wouldn’t have been able to do this today. All in all we had 50 volunteers attend and 200 bags of litter were collected, removed or recycled,” said Trembath.

She further thanked sponsors like Corruseal, Shereno Printers, Gas and Hardware, Total Garage Lakefield and Bad Boyz Hillbrow for contributing towards the success of the initiative.

“The community has been absolutely amazing. Without them we wouldn’t have been able to do this today. All in all we had 50 volunteers attend and 200 bags of litter were collected, removed or recycled,” said Trembath.
