GoLocal dishing out Covid-19 relief to thousands
The GoLocalProject facilities will sustainably capacitate 200 000 people per year and prepare Africa for the Fourth Industrial Revolution
Rickey de Beer, who has been a PR councillor in Ward 42 since 2016, launched the GoLocalProject recently.
It is aimed at alleviating poverty in communities, as well as empowering individuals through skills development. The project was launched under the auspices of the Mark Fish Foundation and has roped in a number of partnerships.
During the launch, held at a private house in Germiston, de Beer gave an overview of what the project will entail.
According to de Beer, they had already started giving out 50 000 meals per month to those vulnerable and hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Millions of people have lost their jobs and the unemployment rate has sky rocketed. So our first priority during lockdown has been to provide relief to those without food and living in difficult conditions by giving them food parcel. We have established a network of feeding centre’s because GoLocalProject believes you can’t educate someone on an empty stomach,” he said.
De Beer said their main goal is to build 100 sustainable community centre’s across Gauteng that will include Wi-Fi, EDC and food programmes.
He added that they will require about R10-million and have started fund-raising.

“Beneficiaries will be educated and fed for free on any of our courses and anybody who needs help will qualify. We have started engaging with community leaders to ensure that the appropriate solutions are applied in the communities. Under the mentorship of our professional team, the project is monitored to reduce risk and overspending,” de Beer said.
The founder of the project said the pilot project is intended to support communities around Boksburg such as Reiger Park and Ramaphosa as well communities in the Germiston area.
