SPCA rescues ostrich that escaped from the Rondebult Bird Sanctuary
Drones and a helicopter were used to try and round up the birds
On September 14, the Boksburg SPCA assisted in rescuing one of the two ostriches that escaped from the Rondebult Bird Sanctuary in Germiston.
According to the Boksburg SPCA manager, Vicky Finnemore, the birds broke out of a poorly maintained boundary fence of the bird sanctuary.
It’s understood the birds were spotted on the border of Germiston and Boksburg before fleeing along an open veld, endangering themselves to all sorts of obstacles.
“Boksburg and Germiston inspectors, joined by teams from other organisations including the EMPD, were out the entire day searching for the two missing birds.
“The chase became desperate when the birds headed towards a local informal settlement, and we feared they would be slaughtered for consumption,” said Finnemore.
Drones and a helicopter were used to try and round up the ostriches. The birds split up and as darkness fell the teams managed to capture one of the birds, but the other got away.
The captured animal was taken to a local veterinarian where it was assessed and later taken to the Bokkie Park. The team is still searching for the second ostrich.
Finnemore pointed out ostriches are extremely dangerous when threatened and must be handled with caution.
