Leon Scholtz, who sustained brain injuries following an assault outside Top Shots Saloon on March 5 in 2016, passed away on June 30, 2020.
The Advertiser previously reported that Leon was found lying in a pool of blood, beside his car, outside Top Shops, in Trichardts Road.
Leon’s father, Johan, said his son was at Top Shots with his friends before the attack.
“By the look of things he was probably attacked by more than one person,” said Johan.
Johan said Leon died due to complications from the attack.
“Leon needed 24-hour care after the attack. He was unable to do anything for himself. His health kept on deteriorating. Eventually, he passed away,” explained Johan.
Johan said he and Leon’s mother, Petro, took care of him at their house in Impala Park.
“We had to take care of him ourselves. Leon needed nappies, medication and special food that costed us about R 2000 a month. We’re also looking after two of his children now,” Johan said.
The father stressed he is heartbroken about his son’s death, and he wants justice to prevail.
Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson Const Justice Ramaube said that the case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was opened after the attack has been closed.
“A suspect has been arrested in connection with the case, and he appeared in court. However, the case was withdrawn as he could not be linked to the attack.
“For the case to be opened again, we need credible information or evidence. Furthermore, we don’t have sufficient prove that the victim died due to his injuries as the assault happened a long time ago,” said Ramaube.
Furthermore, Leon’s partner and mother of his children, Charlene said the family is in need of the community’s assistance.
“I’m in need of any type of sponsorship such as clothing and other necessities. My son, Dylan also has a hearing problem and is in need of new ear moulds,” Charlene.
Anybody who is able to assist the family in any way may send Whats App to Charlene on 0649413997 or an email to rpaphitis@gmail.com.
