Local artist thrives behind the camera
Karen said it doesn’t matter how ordinary the subject may be, there is always something to be captured and shown in a different way
Sunward Park-based designer and artist Karen Seidel started photography as a hobby about 10 years ago and soon discovered that her passion lay in capturing images of birds and wildlife.
After noticing how much can be learned from each species, Karen began spending more time watching, appreciating and taking photos of animals.
“When I downloaded the photos and really looked at the pictures, I noticed how much detail of the animals we don’t see. This was partly what motivated me to take photos and start telling the story of animals and birds. Understanding animal behaviour is one of the elements in taking that perfect photograph,” said Karen.
What are some of her proudest moments behind the camera?
“SA Birdlife’s bi-monthly magazine, African Birdlife, recently published my photo of a beautiful jacana chick on the cover of the magazine and a portfolio coverage inside with eight of my photos,” she explained.
According to her, it doesn’t matter how ordinary the subject may be, there is always something to be captured and shown in a different way.
