Families living in Hazelwood Avenue, Windmill Park, have for days been forced to endure the stench of sewage, despite trying to get the Ekurhuleni metro to fix the sewer line.
It’s unclear as to what caused the problem, but residents believe it’s due to a damaged sewer pipe line or manhole, which sends waste water into the streets and homes, and a nearby wetland.
According to one of the concerned residents, Crystal Triegaardt, the waste water started to flow in between homes and flooded her yard on November 12. What bothers the residents more is that they reported the problem to the metro and received reference numbers, but the situation has not improved.
“The stench has becomes unbearable. We can’t even sit outside or open our windows to get fresh air. My 71-year-old mother reported the spill many times, but the problems still persist. They don’t seem to care,” said Triegaardt.
The Triegaardt family then resorted to digging a narrow trench to channel the wastewater away from their yard.
Triegaardt pointed out that they have constantly been battling with sewage spills in the area since early October.
“In addition to this one, several sewage spills have occurred here. Sometimes they would come to fix it, but hours after they have left, it starts again.
The Advertiser is still awaiting the metro’s comment on the problem.
