The Boksburg SPCA’s Facebook page, which boasts about 18 400 followers who are not only from Boksburg but all over the country, has strived to remain relevant throughout the years.
The Advertiser spoke to Sue Beadon, the main woman behind the successful Boksburg SPCA’s Facebook page, to find out what’s her secret recipe.
Beadon joined the Boksburg SPCA committee in 2018 and took over the secretary vacant portfolio later on that year. In 2019, she began helping on the Boksburg SPCA’s page, which was managed by the previous manger, Maggie Mudd.
When she took over the page it had just over 5 000 followers.
According to Beadon, her devotion and time spent on the society’s Facebook page contributes to the enormous followers they’ve gained in a space of two years.
“I spend more time on various posts, answering questions and queries that come from our loyal followers on the page. I must say, it’s time-consuming; it’s a valuable time that a manager or someone in the office would not have to spare. I go to the Boksburg SPCA quite frequently and that’s where I get to know how many dogs or cats are up for adoption,” Beadon said.
Beadon said she tries to make each and every post as personal as possible by telling the animal stories, work the inspectors do and appreciation posts to donors.
Meanwhile, her passion for animals has been her driving force to volunteer at the Boksburg SPCA. Some of the challenges she still faces in her line of work includes time management.
“I often end up working on the page late into the night. Our reception is very busy, so sometimes there is a delay in me receiving the animal’s pictures, updates on who are reserved, who have gone home and the donations received. Another challenge is that our Facebook page is not monitored 24/7 and when our followers report cruelty or sick and dying animals via messenger, there is a chance we miss a quick response to help that animal,” she said.
She advises the public to call the Boksburg SPCA directly when they want to report cases of animal cruelty, sick or injured animals.
Beadon shared that she sometimes get rude and derogatory messages on Facebook, but luckily they are a minority.
“I do not engage or respond as I believe this is a reflection on their character as a person,” Beadon said.
