Watch: Cansa Shavathon proves to be a success
Boksburg residents who didn’t want to shave or spray their hair showed support by making a contribution
Despite the economic challenges posed by the impact of Covid-19, the community of Boksburg still managed to dig deep into its pockets to support the Cansa Shavathon initiative.
Compared to other years, 2021’s Shavathon only had a few people participating.
In Boksburg, the Shavathons were held at the East Rand Traders, East Point Shopping Centre and East Rand Mall.
Shoppers at these malls had a choice of either getting their hair shaved or sprayed.
Those who didn’t want to shave or spray their hair showed support by contributing to purchasing Shavathon items like Cansa headwear, socks, colouring books and badges.

East Point Shopping Centre
The East Point shopping Centre’s Shavathon team managed to raise R2 620 and 50 ponytails.
Out of the 50 ponytails, Wizards Hair Studio situated at the centre, donated about 42 of them. Other participants donated the rest.

The ponytails were collected from June last year until February all thanks to hairstylist Nina Morgenrood, who has been driving the ponytail initiative at the salon for years.
During the Shavathon Die Voortrekkers, who were volunteering at East Point Shopping Centre, had an opportunity to spray Mary Tintingler (73), the eldest participant’s hair.

Her son, Shaun Tintinger of Witfield, said he was shaving his hair for his aunt Elsie Carick who died many years ago because of cancer.
Naomi Slabbert of Meal Street, a restaurant situated at the centre, surprised the team with refreshments for the day.

Angelique Brits, fund-raising coordinator of Cansa East Rand, said: “The turnout this year was a bit slow due to Covid-19 but we are still positive and encourage people to support such initiatives.”
East Point Shopping Centre’s marketing manager Chardae Jarrus also came through to show support.
East Rand Traders
At the East Rand Traders, the team managed to raise R5 227 on February 27 and 28.
Tamara Wittstock, the fund-raising coordinator of Cansa East Rand, said they received support from young and old.

“We appreciate the support. We are aware that people are scared to go out due to Covid-19 but it warms our heart that we still see people coming out to support this wonderful initiative,” Wittstock said.
Samantha Selales, the floor manager at East Rand Traders, was part of the energetic team.

East Rand Mall
The total amount raised at the East Rand Mall was R3570.
