The police are searching for a group of men suspected to be involved in a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist that took place along Van Dyk Road, near the Engen garage, on the morning of March 29.

According to the police, a G4S cash van was rammed off the road by a green Mercedes-Benz, causing the cash van to stop.

Police spokesperson Col Brenda Muridili said a group of suspects robbed the security guards of an undisclosed amount of money after they allegedly used explosives to bomb the cash vehicle.

“The suspects then made off with the undisclosed amount of money in a white Mercedes-Benz and a black Audi. Two security guards were taken to hospital for medical attention,” Muridili said.

According to a source, about R6.2-million worth of cash was stolen during the robbery. The source further revealed that the cash vehicle was coming from Dunswart to offload money at a local ATM.

Meanwhile, a witness who asked not to be named, said he heard a loud bang. “Everything happened so fast because after I heard the loud bang I immediately went to hide. Eventually, when I came out to see, I saw the cash van covered in smoke,” said the witness.
The police are appealing to anyone who has information about the whereabouts of the suspects to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or send a tip-off on the MySAPS app.
