NPO to help protect the cat population
The organisation is helping to sterilise, feed and rehome kittens and cats.
A new NPO in Libradene, Colour of Love, needs the community’s support to help and protect cats in Boksburg and Benoni.
Residents Leigh-Anne Stevenson and Mike Bouguenon started the non-profit organisation last year after they picked up an abandoned cat at an industrial site and realised how many stray cats are out there being uncared for.
Colour of Love’s main aim is to protect the cat population and ensure their environment is as safe as possible.
The organisation is also helping to sterilise, feed and rehome kittens and cats. They are also taking care of about 26 cats at their sanctuary in Libradene.
“Our mission is to catch and release as many cats in the Boksburg and Benoni area.
“We catch a cat by trapping it in a cat trap and then we take the animal for sterilisation. When the animal is healthy, we take it back to where we found it as cats are usually part of a colony. We will continue to feed it.
“There are lots of cats that need our help. Some people dump cats in parking lots and others just leave their pets behind when they emigrate,” Bouguenon explained.
He highlighted that it’s important for cats to be sterilised.
“Cats can have four to five kittens every four months and the population can get out of control if nobody does anything about it.”
Bouguenon stressed they need funds and volunteers to continue the good work they are doing.
“Leigh-Ann and I both have full-time jobs and have everything in our free time. This is why we will appreciate it if volunteers can perhaps assist us with trapping the cats. Schools are also welcome to contact us if their learners want to become involved.
“Monetary donations are also welcome as it’s expensive to sterilise and feed animals. No donation is too small,” he said.
Furthermore, the public can donate secondhand items such as household goods and clothing to the organisation. The founders are selling the items at markets and the Advertiser’s car boot sale (at the Bokkie Park every first Saturday of the month) to raise funds for the initiative.
