50 years of wedded bliss

Gawie Scheepers (72) and his sweetheart Dollie (68), celebrated their golden anniversary (50 years) on May 1.

To celebrate this milestone, their two daughters surprised them with 50 white roses and a hamper filled with goodies.

Relating their love story to the Advertiser, Gawie said they met in 1969 through Dollie’s late sister, Yvonne.

Gawie, who was a rugby player during his school days at Hoërskool Voortrekker, said his wife’s eyes attracted him the most.

“The first time I laid my eyes on her I fell in love. I think it was love at first sight,” he said.

“Her lovely, greenish eyes took my breath away. What I also loved about her was she was very reserved, down to earth and attractive.”

Dollie said when they got married she was only 19 and her husband 22.

“We were married on May 1, 1971, at the Gereformeerde Church in Elsburg,” she said.

“What I loved about my husband is that he is an outgoing person, soft-spoken and kind. I believe what kept us together was that we respect and trust one another. Like any other couple we argue, but we get over it.”

Gawie added their arguments don’t last too long because he always remembers his vows.

The two love birds, who retired in 2012 and 2015 respectively, after working together at Global Roofing as a salary administrator and a buyer, said they are now enjoying each other’s company.

Dollie said she keeps herself busy with house chores, cooking and baking, while Gawie keeps busy in the garden.

Their advice to young couples is: “Trust, respect and be loyal to each other, no matter what. Be each other’s friend and let love lead in every situation.”
