DA candidate Carolana Marais won the by-elections with a total of 2 303 votes.

The DA proved to be the preferred political party to lead Ward 43 after coming out victorious in the municipal by-elections on May 19.

DA candidate Carolana Marais won the by-elections with a total of 2 303 votes and with 66.1 per cent.

Other political parties who were vying for the vacant seat attained few votes. The ANC received 646 votes, followed by independent with 390 votes and lastly the EFF bagging 150 votes.

The ward was previously represented by the DA, and the seat became vacant as a result of the death of its former councillor, Bruce Reid.

Ward 43 consists of areas such as Sunward Park, Freeway Park, Klipoortjie, Groeneweide, Windmill Park and Dawn Park.

On May 19, the Advertiser visited two voting stations: Sunward Park High School and the Sunward Park Recreational Centre (Sunward Park sports ground), where various political parties were spotted camping outside while voters proceeded inside the venues.

Marius van der Merwe made his voice heard with his vote at Sunward Park High School.

One of the voters, Sonia van Niekerk, who cast her vote at Sunward Park Recreational Centre, said through her vote she was expecting to see change in her area, especially when it comes to potholes.

Another voter, Cylvia Scholds, said she was happy to have cast her vote.

Meanwhile, the presiding officer at Sunward Park High, Buntu Mali, said they’ve had a positive turnout and things have been running smoothly.
