Mall helps empower women

The free self-defence session was held to especially empower women to be able to take care of themselves.

The East Rand Mall teamed up with Magma Security Consultants and Training Professionals for a free self-defence session for the public at the mall on May 19.

Magma’s Paul Sheasby, who was doing various self-defence demonstrations with son Matthew, said the event was to especially empower ladies to be able to take care of themselves.

Mrs South Africa semi-finalist 2021 and Boksburg’s own Stacy van den Heever, who was present at the event, echoed and elaborated on Sheasby’s sentiments when she said the demonstration was a confidence booster for women.

The mall’s GM, Petra Foord, and marketing manager Pierre Botha were also in attendance.

“I’m passionate about mental health. My goal is to improve others with their mental health. I believe mental health is something we have to work on regularly in order to keep our minds healthy,” said van den Heever.

“The demonstration is about self-defence in conjunction with confidence. I believe if we are confident in protecting ourselves against harm and just confidence, in general, gives you a great boost.

“There’s absolutely nothing I think we can’t achieve when we’re confident. In saying that, there are also so many things we don’t get because we’re not confident, not because we’re not able but because we’re not confident.

“That’s what today is about, to allow people to take back a little of their confidence and give women the chance to protect themselves against potential threats, as obviously gender-based violence is a huge issue in South Africa.”
