Teachers to receive Covid-19 jabs
Boksburg teachers are next in line to be vaccinated from June 23.
The Gauteng Department of Education is gearing up for its vaccination rollout on June 23, where teachers and support staff will be inoculated at various sites across the country.
The vaccination programme will run until July 8, a day before schools close to mark the end of the second school term.
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, who’ll also receive his jab at the Rabasotho Hall in Thembisa, said Gauteng is aiming to vaccinate approximately 125 934 employees, which includes educators, education support staff and officials at 46 vaccination sites in all regions.
“As the Gauteng Department of Education, we believe that this vaccination drive will effectively begin the process of normalising schooling and mitigating the disruptive impact of Covid-19 in our schools,” Lesufi said.
The Advertiser spoke to a few schools in Boksburg to find out if they were ready for the vaccination drive.
According to the principal of Boksburg High School, Enoch Thango, they are still compiling a list to be sent to the Gauteng Department of Education regarding how many teachers want to get vaccinated.
Windmill Park Primary School principal Oscar Lekoane said a majority of his teachers were ready to get the vaccine.
“We have sent information to the department with all the names and identity numbers of the teachers who want to be inoculated. We are still waiting for the department to provide us with the dates on when teachers will go and vaccinate,” said Lekoane.
Hoërskool Voortekker’s deputy principal, Gerhard Joubert, said: “At this stage, we’re still waiting for the Department of Basic Education to inform us about how everything is going to work. We have about 70 staff members that will have the opportunity to get inoculated against the virus.”
The principal of Laerskool Concordia, Charel Blignaut, said: “This morning (June 22) we had to send in a form with details of all our staff members who want to be vaccinated against the virus. The Department of Basic Education will inform us where and when they can get the vaccine.
“We have about 73 staff members who will get inoculated. Some staff are over 60 and already received their vaccine dosage.”
Laerskool Baanbreker, Hoërskool Oosterlig and Laerskool Westwood also told the Advertiser they were awaiting information from the Department of Basic Education.
