Update: More than 3 746 teachers in Ekurhuleni have received their Covid-19 jabs
About 125 934 people who work in the education sector are expected to get vaccinated.
By June 25, over 3 740 teachers and support staff in Ekurhuleni have been vaccinated following the vaccine rollout in the education sector.
The government launched its mass vaccination drive on June 23, where over 10 050 educators, staff and school governing body personnel across Gauteng have received their jabs.
According to Gauteng MEC of Education Panyaza Lesufi, they are pleased with the progress made at all 60 sites in Gauteng, as no major glitches have been reported so far besides a few challenges that were dealt with.
Lesufi has thanked the department of health for acquiring the vaccine and prioritising the education sector.
“We appreciate and endorse the decision to ensure educators are protected. That is why as the education department we are committing ourselves that we will cherish this opportunity and ensure we complete the roll-out in the timeframe given,” said Lesufi.
The vaccination programme will run until July 8, a day before schools close to mark the end of the second school term.
