Boksburg SPCA confiscates neglected rabbits from farm
The Boksburg SPCA is appealing to the public to assist them with donations, including bails of teff, eragrostis, oat hay, fruits and vegetables for the rabbits.
Inspectors from Boksburg SPCA recently raided a rabbit farm in Mapleton where about 200 rabbits were confiscated due to their living conditions and the physical health of the animals.
According to the Boksburg SPCA manager, Vicky Finnemore, the inspectors had been monitoring the facility for several weeks, serving warnings and recommending changes to improve the area but, unfortunately, the owner of the farm chose not to cooperate, which resulted in the removal of the rabbits.
Finnemore said the rabbits, which were being bred and sold for consumption were infested with ear mites while some had chronic bacterial infections in the tear ducts and nasal sinuses.

“The rabbits had been living in small steel cages with no form of bedding to protect their bodies or feet from the wire flooring.”
The manager said charges of animal cruelty will be laid for the suffering these rabbits endured.
While the society sits with dozens of bunnies in their care, they are appealing to the public to assist with donations, including bails of teff, eragrostis, oat hay, fruits and vegetables.
EFTs are also welcomed. To donate, you can deposit into the following bank account: EFT a donation: SPCA Boksburg, Absa, Account number: 404 6388 139, Branch: 632005 and Reference: RABBIT.
