Tryston Jansen van Vuuren, a Grade Nine learner from Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen, who was seriously injured in a freak accident, has been discharged from hospital on October 6 and is recovering well at home.

Doctors initially told his parents, Jan and Michelle Janse van Vuuren, that he would have to be treated in hospital for six to eight weeks after a giant tyre fell on him at school on September 13 when he and his friends were playing with it.

The boy sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Alberton. Tryston broke his pelvis, the bone above his coccyx and cracked a vertebra. His neck was also slightly hurt.

“We’re so grateful that he’s been discharged. It’s so nice to have him back in the house. We were under the impression that he will only get out of the hospital on October 8 or the following week. However, he phoned me on Wednesday (October 6) morning and said I should come and get him.

“I think his positive attitude and willpower contributed to his speedy recovery. He struggled so much last week when the doctor said he still has to lie down for about two weeks. He just said: ‘No, mom, just give me some time.’ The next day he walked.

“It’s still difficult for him to walk. Somebody must hold him or he must walk with his walking frame. But he’s extremely happy to be home and with his positivity, he will recover quickly.

Michelle thanked those who supported the family and made donations towards Tryston’s medical expenses.

“I would like to thank all the parents of EG Jansen for their prayers, effort and contribution. It is sincerely appreciated,” she added.
