Sewage poison Bokkie Park dam

The facility, however, remains open to the public.

The City of Ekurhuleni announced on its social media platform that its bio-technicians are working around the clock to remedy the situation caused by the sewage spill at the Bokkie Park dam.

According to the metro, water was left contaminated after a blocked sewer pipe sent a pool of raw sewage into the dam. The blockage has been cleared.
The metro explained that water that is contaminated with sewerage causes depletion of oxygen and decomposition of organics (sewerage). This causes blackness in the water.

Sewage spill contaminated the Bokkie Park dam.

Officials resolved the only solution is the remediation of nutrient overload by adding oxygen in the form of products such as Eco-tabs or similar products that release oxygen slowly through a process of bioaugmentation.

“The bioaugmentation process is ongoing and there is an improvement in the water quality already, as there is no longer a smell and no more fish have died since the bioremediation process started.
“Therefore, the bioremediation process will continue until the water quality has fully normalised,” read the metro’s social media post.”

The facility remains open to the public.
