Boksburg’s Louw Breytenbach crowned Mr Gay World 2021
The newly crowned Mr Gay World 2021 said he entered the pageant because he liked the charity aspect of the competition.
TV presenter, actor and theatre owner Louw Breytenbach, of Boksburg, went from offering cleaning services to financially survive lockdown to being crowned Mr Gay World 2021.
The 31-year-old was announced Mr Gay World during a virtual crowning, making him the first South African to bring home the crown since Francios Nel won the title in 2011 and Charl van den Berg in 2010.
In addition to winning the title, Breytenbach also scooped the Personal Interview 2021, Mr Photogenic 2021 and Viewers’ Choice 2021 awards.
Breytenbach said it is a huge honour to be crowned Mr Gay World.
“Twelve years ago I tried to commit suicide a third time. Two years ago I was in a life-altering car accident, which was highly publicised and landed me in a mental health facility. Then I made the papers for my weight struggles and closing businesses in lockdown.
“So many were shocked that a year ago I cleaned houses to make ends meet and keep my staff employed. A cancer scare, Covid and plenty of breakdowns later, we got here. Never stop trying, never stop fighting and never stop believing. Your future self depends on you getting through today’s struggle. You are so worthy.
“I am so blessed and thankful to every person who made Mr Gay World possible. The crown is in Africa for the first time in a decade. Sixty-nine countries in the world still criminalise homosexuality and 29 of them are in Africa. I want to be a driving force to change this and challenge this along with my existing charities,” said Breytenbach in a statement.
The newly crowned Mr Gay World thanked the Lord, his family, friends, fans, supporters, sponsors, Alan Ford Productions and Norman Cahi.
Breytenbach will reign consecutively with the Mr Gay World 2020 winner Kodie Macayan, representing the Philippines, making it the first time in history that two Mr Gay World delegates will reign at the same time.
