A 43-year-old woman was arrested for perjury after she recently opened a fake hijacking case at the Boksburg North Police Station.
According to Boksburg North police spokesperson Const Justice Ramaube, the woman told the police that while driving her VW Polo Classic she offered a lift to a woman she found hitchhiking along Trichardts Road on October 30.
While waiting for the woman to get into the car, two men got in and instructed her to sit in the passenger seat.
She said the hitchhiker then drove the vehicle until she crashed into a motorbike.
“The woman alleged that after the woman crashed into the motorbike, they took her out of the vehicle and put her into another vehicle, a silver Toyota Corolla, and she was then ‘dumped’ in Kempton Park. She also said her Huawei phone was stolen during the hijacking,” said Ramaube.
During the investigation, WO Williem Aswagen realised that the woman had lied and was called in to assist with further information.
“She ended up confessing when she was asked where exactly the hijacking took place,” said Ramaube.
He said investigations revealed the woman crashed into the back of the motorbike while under the influence of alcohol.
Realising what she had done, the woman reportedly ran away from the scene. Police said her vehicle was towed away by EMPD officers that day.
She was arrested on November 1 and charged with perjury. The matter has been placed on the court roll.
The acting Boksburg North SAPS station commander, Lt Col Kwena Meso, commended Aswagen for the good work.
He further cautioned the public to refrain from reporting false cases as the police will not tolerate a waste of state resources, which should be used to combat serious and violent crimes.
