Probe into fatal bus crash at Civic Centre clinic drags on

Detectives have been unable to locate certain crucial information.

The municipal bus crash which led to the death of two women at the Boksburg Civic Centre Clinic in April is still under investigation by the Boksburg police.

Annatjie van Niekerk (61) of Witfield and Ramaphosa resident Livhuaani Mahashe (44) died after being hit by the metro bus in the parking lot outside the clinic on April 6.

Police registered culpable homicide cases immediately after the accident.

The investigation into the deadly accident has, however, dragged on for almost seven months now.

This publication asked the police why the case has taken so long to unravel.

Police revealed that detectives are encountering a few hold-ups to obtain certain crucial information.

According to the Boksburg police spokesperson, Sgt Ntsako Ledwaba, detectives are waiting for documents that include the full report on the state of the bus, its roadworthy certificate disc and the victims’ post-mortem reports.

“We are working hard to get the case solved as soon as possible, but the delay to obtain the outstanding information makes it hard to make significant progress,” Ledwaba explained.

According to a well-placed source, the licence disc of the bus was nowhere to be found after the crash.

Metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini was approached for comment on the missing disc.

He said, “Pending investigations will reveal if these claims are true or not.”

Dlamini referred the Advertiser to the EMPD, stating this is the right department to comment on the progress of the accident probe as it was assigned to investigate the matter.

EMPD spokesperson Kelebogile Thepa did not respond to the Advertiser’s request for comment on the investigation.

The Advertiser previously reported the then mayor of Ekurhuleni, Mzwandile Masina, said the preliminary investigations indicated the brakes of the municipal bus were not faulty.

Masina made this statement during his visit to the bereaved families of the deceased in Witfield and Buhle Park, respectively, on April 7.

He added that a full inspection would be carried out to determine the cause of the crash.
