#homemade: Sisanda dishes up a feast

All thanks to the Boksburg Advertiser’s initiative, more than 57 people have listed their micro-enterprise on the Advertiser’s website free of charge, showcasing their home-made or handmade items.

Continuing to shine a spotlight on small businesses in this week’s edition of Home-made and Handmade, the Advertiser features Sisanda Makubungu (34) of Ramaphosa, who sells homemade food.

Situated in Mkholonjane Street, Makubungu sells pap, steak, beef stew, grilled chicken, Mogodu and salads in her area. She also sells the food to people working in Isando and Elandsfontein daily.

According to Makubungu, losing her job last year September due to the pandemic sparked the entrepreneurial spirit in her.

The 34-year-old, who was employed as a cook at a company in Elandsfontein, said she decided to open her own business using the skills she acquired while working at the business canteen.

“I was struggling to make ends meet for my two children. Because I’ve always liked to cook, it was easy for me to turn my passion into a business.”

Makubungu said as soon as she received her UIF funds, she used it to buy stock and equipment.

The mother of two, who runs her business from her rented room, explained her daily work routine.

“I wake up at 03:30 to start cooking and by 09:00 I start selling my food to my customers in Isando and Elandsfontein until 12:30. Because of the heavy equipment I carry, I hire private transport to take me to these two areas. During the weekends, people who already know that I sell food buy from me,” she said.

Makubungu said if she can get a caravan that will be based in Elandsfontien it will make her work easier because she could save on transport costs.

She is available to cater weddings, baby showers and birthday parties.
