World Aids Day commemorated in Ekurhuleni

Residents are encouraged to get tested, get vaccinated and adhere to treatment.

The City of Ekurhuleni hosted a World Aids Day commemoration on December 1 under the theme Working Together to End Inequalities, Aids, TB & Covid-19.

The event, which was also attended by representatives of local and provincial government, was held at the Duduza Multipurpose Centre.

In her address at the event, newly elected Mayor of Ekurhuleni Tania Campbell reminded residents that the fight against HIV/Aids, TB, STIs and Covid-19 requires concerted efforts by community members, government and the private sector.

It was revealed at the World Aids Day commemoration that the City of Ekurhuleni has the second-highest HIV burden in Gauteng province, and the third-highest nationally, with 56 4900 people with HIV aged between 15 years and older.

“While the staggering number of people with HIV in Ekurhuleni is an alarming disclosure, the City is steadfast in providing a wide range of health services through primary healthcare facilities and hospitals supported by development partners.
“The City’s Aids Council, established in September 2019, walks the journey with Ekurhuleni residents through the provision of support and counselling on how to live when infected or affected by HIV,” said Campbell.

A candle-lighting ceremony was also held in memory of those who have died, and to keep the candle of faith burning for those who affected and infected by HIV.
