Silver fox packs a punch

"I run so that I can enjoy what I eat."

Brenda Steenkamp (66) of Parkrand wears many hats: mum, granny, businesswoman and wife, but has become synonymous with what fighting fit and fierce looks like.

Whether she is running, exercising or kickboxing – trainers and sparring partners agree that if Brenda can do it, so can anyone.

“I have always been active and a very competitive sports person,” she said.
“About six years ago I was looking in the mirror and did not like what I saw. “I was looking tired and run down, so I strapped on my running shoes and hit the road, averaging 15km per week.”

As she grew fitter and faster, she once again sought a challenge and joined the Goju Karate Academy’s fitness classes.

“I walked into the class and quickly realised I was the oldest person there. Well, I was not going to be left in the dust, so I pushed through,” she said.
“I believe your greatest hurdle is your mind, but it is also your biggest asset. Once you have set a firm goal and stay focused, you are capable of anything.”

Soon, this small stick of dynamite started facing off with 100kg punching bags and leaving sparring partners bruised when she joined the dojo’s kickboxing classes.

“Of all my exercise routines, kickboxing is my favourite because I can see week by week that I have become faster and stronger,” she said.
“Being able to stand steady against the younger lads is also super rewarding.”

Despite living an active and healthy lifestyle, Brenda has no illusions about her body’s limits.

“I know I will at some point have to retire my running shoes, for the creaking in my joints tells me so,” she said.
“Staying fit is my fountain of youth. It keeps my brain sharp and my family sane. I have too much energy.”

Brenda recently joined the Boksburg Parkrun coordinating committee as a means of giving back to the community. She hopes to motivate others on their fitness journeys.

“For some participants, the parkrun is the only place where they feel safe to run or due to work demands can only exercise on a Saturday,” she said.

“I hope my small role within the organising committee will give those people the experience they desire.”
