Update: New home for Hyacinth

The family is excited about welcoming the dog to their home.

The Meyer family from Parkdene gave Skye (Hyacinth), the crossbreed collie that was rescued from the mass of hyacinth in Witfield Dam on January 28, a new lease on life by adopting her.

The Advertiser previously reported the dog was trapped for two hours and finally freed through the collective efforts of Witfield residents, CPF members, the SAPS Water Wing Squad, Boksburg SPCA, Netcare paramedics and FRS security personnel.

Before the cohesive effort, two brave men, Dries van der Merwe and Norman Watkins, went into the dam at about 09:15 to save the dog.

Unfortunately, they were also trapped by the hyacinth.

Community members and representatives from the organisations on scene pulled them and the dog out of the water.

The dog of about four years was in a good condition after the rescue and was put up for adoption after nobody claimed her.

Charmaine and Antonie Meyer and their daughter Adomay adopted her and took her home on February 18.
They named her Skye.

“We followed her story on social media and couldn’t stop thinking about her.

“We adopted her when I saw she was still up for adoption about a week ago.

“We can’t wait to welcome her to our family. She is going to get lots of love,” said Charmaine.

Skye will live with the Meyer family and their dogs, Princess and Lulu, and cats, Mamma Katjie and Katjie.

Manager of the Boksburg SPCA Vicky Finnemore thanked the family for adopting Skye, adding she knows she is going to be happy.

Finnemore added the SPCA also handed certificates to van der Merwe and Watkins for their bravery.
