Local swimmer sets his sights on Italy
The Advertiser knocked on the door of the talented swimmer to find out more about him and his career
Aiden Bornman (17) from the Boksburg Aquatic Saints Swimming and Lifesaving Club is having a great season this year, having proved his mettle in the swimming pool.
For Aiden, the sky is the limit and has worked extremely hard to get to where he is now.
“Swimming is a rewarding sport, which is why I enjoy it so much. You work hard, and when you finally win or get that break, you feel like you’ve accomplished something.
“It is really exciting when hard work pays off. Preparations are going well as I practice for two hours every day, twice a day. My love of swimming began when I was three years old and I have continued to love the water since then.”
Out of his many achievements, his performance at the DHL LSA Lifesaving South African Championships held in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) in March stands out.
He obtained four gold medals (200m obstacle, 100m rescue medley, 100m manikin with fins and 50m manikin carry) in the pool in the men’s 16-17 age category and a bronze medal in the run/swim/run surf event.
Aiden also broke the current South African record in the 100m rescue medley, first breaking the record in the heats and then breaking his own South African record again in the final.
He has been recently selected to compete in the Lifesaving World Championships to be held in Italy.
The Sunward Park resident is set to represent South Africa from September 20 to 27.
His mother, Dayle Bornman, said: “I am proud and it seems surreal sometimes because it is what he has dreamt of since he was young. It is all about passion, if you are passionate about something you will be successful.”
