Ekurhuleni mourns the passing of EHC CEO

The CEO of the Ekurhuleni Housing Company (EHC) reportedly passed away on Saturday morning at his home in Kempton Park.

The city said Bongani Molefe’s untimely passing had left a significant void in the city’s leadership because his commitment and diligence in spearheading the development and management of rental housing stock for low and moderate-income households was instrumental in uplifting the lives of countless residents in Ekurhuleni.

The newly elected mayor of Ekurhuleni, Sivuyile Ngodwana, on behalf of the CoE, extended his condolences to the late Molefe’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.

“It is with a heavy heart and deep sorrow that I express my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Bongani Molefe, the esteemed CEO of EHC.
“Under Molefe’s exceptional tenure as CEO, EHC made great strides in the development of new social and rental housing, the refurbishment and upgrading of council-owned rental housing stock, and the turnaround in the inner-city high-density rental buildings project,” said Ngodwana.

The mayor pointed out that Molefe’s dedication to EHC’s mission positively impacted many lives and left a lasting legacy for the CoE.

“As we mourn the loss of a remarkable leader, I express my profound gratitude to Molefe for his exceptional service and unwavering dedication to our community. His invaluable contributions will be remembered, and his vision will continue to inspire us as we work to build a better future for the residents of Ekurhuleni.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with you all as you navigate this period of grief.”

Ekurhuleni Housing Company
The EHC is a municipal-owned entity with a mandate to develop and manage the social and residential rental property in the city.

Its purpose is to provide affordable housing, specifically rental and social housing.
The primary target market for the EHC is home-seekers whose household incomes meet the criteria for the Restructuring Capital Grant (RCG) and institutional housing subsidy.
The beneficiaries’ household income must be between R1 500 and R15 000 monthly.

The EHC is mandated to:
• Development of new social and rental housing, refurbishment, upgrading and management of selected council-owned rental housing stock, refurbishment of inner-city high-density rental buildings; and the provision of turnaround strategies where necessary.

EHC current projects
Germiston: the company has embarked on a project to build 353 rental units next to the Germiston Fire Station on the corner of Linton Jones and President streets. Phase one will produce 144 units, and 209 will be built in phase two, all at the estimated cost of R72m.
Delville Ext 9: a total of 112 units will be built on Sekel Street, Delville. The estimated cost is R60m.
The EHC plans to develop 3 329 different unit types over the next five years, and the total capital development budget for the planned units is estimated to be R635m over the five years.

New tenant applications
To qualify, you must meet the following criteria:
• Applicants must be 21 or older
• Must be a South African citizen
• Must be permanently employed
• Married or single with dependents
• Applicants must have a combined monthly income of between R3 500 and R15 000
• Must not have owned any property or benefited from any government housing subsidy
• Must be employed for at least six months at the same employer
• ITC check.
Documents required on application:
• Request for proof of current residential address
• Payslip (latest)
• Three months’ bank statement in respect of permanent employees
• Six months’ bank statement in terms of self-employed applicants
• Business registration document
• Confirmation letter from the employer
• Marriage certificate
• Certified divorce decree
• Birth certificate of a child (certified copy)
• Death certificate (in case of widow)
• Pension card/slip i.e. civil servant’s retired government employees should submit proof of payment slip by the government department
• Valid South African identity document (certified copy)
• Letter from school if dependents are older than 21
• Affidavit (relevant to applications)

An application form must be completed if the qualifying criteria and required documents are submitted.
