The Boksburg Historical Association (BHA) has appealed for help to preserve a cenotaph built in honour of the ERPM servicemen killed in WWI between 1914 and 1918.
The more than 100-year-old piece of Boksburg’s history, situated in Comet, features the names of the soldiers from ERPM, including the name of the late mining magnate and ERPM founder, Sir George Farrar.
According to BHA chairperson Teresa Uren, their plans include moving the monument to a safe and peaceful site where the public and veterans can continue to pay their respects to the fallen heroes.
The proposal to move the cenotaph arose from fears it was vulnerable to damage since the mine sold the property that housed it.
Uren said the cenotaph was central to Boksburg and the country’s history because it was a tribute to those who had made the ultimate sacrifice. She added that what it represented must be respected and taken seriously.
