Renowned beer-brewing gurus empower local independent brewers
This time, CBASA has not only focused on education but also on fostering inclusivity in the brewing community.
Dozens of beer enthusiasts descended on Boksburg for the week-long 2023 Beer Boot Camp symposiums and expo at Birchwood Conference Center on August 12.
According to the event organisers, this symposium served as the training and education event of the year for the Craft Brewers Association of South Africa (CBASA).
It brought together leading brewing specialists from across the world to present insightful and informative sessions.
The lineup of speakers included Pete Brown, Gordon Strong, Paul Corbett and Steve ‘Hendo’ Henderson brought their wealth of knowledge and experience to the boot camp and ensured attendees left with a deeper understanding of beer and the industry.
Festivities
Hosted by the CBASA in partnership with SAB, the week of educational events and networking opportunities kicked off with an exclusive five-course beer and food pairing dinner at Shed and Silo Restaurant in Benoni on August 8.
Dignitaries, including prominent CEOs, MECs, and other key industry players, also attended this dinner, providing a perfect setting for fostering meaningful connections within the brewing community.
Beer enthusiasts on August 10 enjoyed a barrel-aged beer workshop at Capital Craft Centurion, presented by Mazen Hajjar, CEO of Hawkers Beer from Australia.
Attendees could partake in a guided tasting of award-winning beers from Hawkers Beer’s barrel-aged beer program, the largest of its kind in Australia.
This workshop with Mazen and Hawkers, which marked a first in South Africa, was an enlightening experience for all the participants.
This time, CBASA has not only focused on education but also on fostering inclusivity in the brewing community.
CBASA ran a successful back-a-beer-buddy campaign, collecting funds to provide free tickets to brewers and entrepreneurs from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, women, and students seeking to upskill and excel in the industry. With generous contributions, 18 individuals attended the symposium at no cost.
To wrap up the week’s events, they invited families to join the Cactus Craft Family Day on August 13. The event featured four mini-education sessions led by overseas experts, continuing the training from the symposium. Families enjoyed craft beer, lamb spit rolls, popcorn, and a photo booth.
The Homebrew Club Showdown competition also took place, showcasing the talents of South Africa’s home brewing community.
Boksburg’s craft brewery, Just Brewing Co, was also part of the organisation of this conference.
Wendy Pienaar from Just Brewing Co said the boot camp provided brewers with educational and networking opportunities that left them inspired and equipped with valuable knowledge of the sector.
