Police van and car collide

The involved police officers were taken to hospital.

A Boksburg North SAPS patrol van and a small motor vehicle were involved in an accident on the corner of Ravenswood and Trichardts roads this morning (April 18).

When the Boksburg Advertiser arrived at the scene, the traffic was backed up, the police van was on its side in the middle of the intersection, and there was damage to the front of the other car involved, a maroon Daewoo Cielo.

According to information gathered, the two police officers in the van were taken to hospital.
The driver of the Daewoo, Andries Viljoen, was still at the scene. He told the Advertiser his arm was hurt and numb, but he was otherwise ‘okay’ and would go to a hospital for a check-up.
Viljoen explained that he was on his way to work in Benoni when the accident happened.

The maroon Daewoo Cielo was written off in the accident.

“I was driving on Ravenswood Road and wanted to continue straight past Trichards Road. The robot was green for me. The police van was on Trichardts Road, in the right turning lane. They, however, did not turn and continued straight. That is when I hit them.
“I got out of my car to find out if the officers were okay. There was a male and a female officer in the van.”

Viljoen did not have information about the seriousness of the officers’ injuries.
He believes his car is a write-off.
The Advertiser is still awaiting comment from the police.
