The AfriForum neighbourhood watches on the East Rand took part in the organisation’s recent national mass patrol and responded to 25 incidents in collaboration with SAPS and private security companies.
AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches in Alberton, Benoni, Boksburg, Brakpan, Edenvale, Germiston, Kempton Park and Springs were visible during the patrol.
The patrol started at 20:00 that evening and lasted until 07:00 the next morning. Jurie Ferreira, the district coordinator for AfriForum on the East Rand, said 115 AfriForum neighbourhood watch members in 96 vehicles, as well as private security companies, medical partners and other security organisations, participated in this patrol, during which more than 8 435 km was covered.
“AfriForum does these national patrols to increase visibility. It also achieves and improves effective cooperation between AfriForum neighbourhood watches, the SAPS, private security companies and other security structures which are extremely important for the community’s safety,” said
“I would like to thank every role player and partner involved, as well as every patrol member for their willingness to sacrifice their time,” he said.
Ferreira said one notable incident in Benoni involved the interception of a stolen vehicle after a licence plate recognition camera in Benoni flagged the vehicle.
Chairperson of the Boksburg branch, Quintin Jacobs, said he is pleased with the outcome of the mass patrol.
“We mostly assisted at accident scenes. We do what we can to keep the community safe,” said Jacobs.
