The Eastern Gauteng Hockey Association (EGHA) U13A girls hockey team recently emerged victorious at the national tournament in Bloemfontein.
The team, comprising players selected from primary schools within the Ekurhuleni Region, and was coached by Zeta Teixeira, a Boksburg High School coach, trained twice a week.
They played friendly games at home before leaving for the tournament from June 19 to 23.
According to Teixeira, at the tournament the team competed in a round-robin system, playing two games per day against provinces like Northern Cape, Southern Free State, North West, Northern Gauteng, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga.
“Despite the demanding schedule, the Eastern Gauteng team remained unbeaten, winning each game with strong, courageous performances. After the third day, the Eastern Gauteng team topped their pool standings and continued their impressive run, winning every game.
“Their consistent performance throughout the tournament earned them the gold medal in the B Section, securing their promotion to the A Section for the next year.”
Teixeira said they are incredibly proud of these players and their schools, who have represented the province with exceptional leadership and skills.
