The Southern Region Older Person Golden Competition Games unfolded with vigour and enthusiasm on July 10 at Germiston Stadium, showcasing the resilience and competitive spirit of older athletes from various communities.
Organised under the auspices of the Department of Sport, Art and Recreation and supported by the Ekurhuleni Older Persons Forum, the event celebrated active ageing and physical prowess among senior citizens.
The games featured a diverse array of sporting disciplines, ranging from track events to race walking, drawing participation from seasoned contenders and first-time competitors.
Among the standout performers were three seniors from Tshepo Ya Sehaba, an organisation based in Dawn Park.
Their stellar performances earned them coveted spots in the upcoming Ekurhuleni Region competitions, setting a high standard for their peers across Gauteng.
Cynthia Nhlapho, founder of Tshepo Ya Sehaba, commended the organisation members for their outstanding achievements.
“The support from the community and our partners has been exceptional,” Nhlapho remarked, highlighting the integral role collaborative efforts played in fostering community engagement and promoting healthy lifestyles among older persons.

“One particularly inspiring achievement was the qualification of a Tshepo Ya Sehaba members in the 800m, jukskei, and race walk events, underscoring the transformative impact of sports on physical fitness and mental well-being among the elderly.
Nhlapho expressed optimism about their prospects in the upcoming stages of the competition,” she said.
“I am thrilled for our qualifiers and hopeful they will excel in the Ekurhuleni and provincial rounds.
The Golden Games, an annual fixture on the senior sports calendar, is a platform for older persons to showcase their athletic abilities and promote active ageing principles.
By emphasising inclusivity and community support, the event encourages physical activity and fosters a sense of belonging and purpose among participants.
