As South African Breed Champion and Kennel Union of Southern Africa (KUSA) Champion Working Dog Award winner for 2023, Benoni’s Igor is a decorated working dog.

At seven years old, the Belgian Malinois, alongside his handler, owner and teammate, Zelna Trutter, has already achieved more than most dogs ever will.

The spirited canine has returned to the competitive working dog sport arena at the South African Working Trials Dog Association (SAWDTA), which s showcases the skills used by police, security and service dogs.

The sport tests the partnership between dog and handler through a range of practical challenges measuring obedience, control, agility, scent work and working ability.

Competitors take part in a variety of disciplines, including control search, scent discrimination, agility, send away, obedience, manwork and detection.

The sport celebrates teamwork, discipline and the remarkable intelligence and natural abilities of working dogs.

As a master in his discipline, Igor has, however, won the hearts of many, working with incredible skill on only three legs, proving that being a champion isn’t just about the medals, but about how you respond when life throws you an unexpected challenge.

Before a devastating injury, the pup had built an impressive career in dog sport, earning.
Tracker Dog 1 and 2 Excellent, Police Dog Excellent and Tracker Trials 3 Excellent.

When he lost use of his leg, Zelna did everything in her power to save the limb, enlisting the help of specialists and exploring every possible treatment.

Eventually, it was decided to amputate the leg, yet, his trusted handler neglected to inform him that three legs were supposed to slow him down.

Back to doing what he loves, Igor is once again competing, showing the same enthusiasm and determination that made him a champion in the first place.

“He went through hell,” said Zelna.

“He taught me never to give up, to find joy in every day and to appreciate the time we have.” Despite his hardships, Zelna continues, saying that Igor’s unique personality still shines brightly.

“He is a people-pleaser, a clown and a dog with an incredible work ethic,” she said.

‘Seppie’ September, commended Zelna and her companion, saying that what they have achieved is remarkable.

“Igor has tremendous heart and drive. Losing a leg never took away the working dog inside him,” he said.

With their determination in sync, Zelna and Igor will participate in the Gauteng Dog Sport competition on August 8 at Kyalami Equestrian Park.

The competition is an important stepping stone towards the national championships in October.
