Astroturf brings fresh energy to Urban Ruins Project’s ECD Centre
The project, which began on August 21 and was finalised on August 27, has completely transformed the play area, bringing joy and excitement to the young children who now have a safe, clean, and beautiful space to enjoy.
Urban Ruins Project NPO has recently completed the installation of a new Astroturf playground at their Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre.
The project, which took around a week to complete last month, was made possible through a successful fundraiser at Birchwood Spur in June, sponsored by Birchwood Spur and The Humanity Foundation.

Founder of Urban Ruins, Clayton Viljoen, explained that the fundraiser was specifically for the upgrade of the playground and enjoyed overwhelming support from residents and businesses.
“The Astroturf installation was completed by Siyathemba Catering, a local company that took on the project with efficiency and dedication.
“Before the renovation, the playground was a dusty, sand-filled area that posed challenges for the children and teachers alike.
“The playground is now a clean, safe environment, and it has improved the overall atmosphere of the ECD centre.”
Viljoen went on to highlight the broader impact of the project.
“This upgrade isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about giving the children a space that fosters their growth and development.
“When children have a clean, engaging, and safe environment to play in, it stimulates their imagination, encourages social interaction and supports their physical development. This is what we aim to achieve at Urban Ruins – a place where young minds can thrive.”
